One thing Carl leaves out is that, due to the British colonial taxation regime, the British were actually getting the opium for free from India — sometimes the farmers would end up owing back taxes to the crown despite having produced massive shipments of opium.

Prabhat and Utsa Patnaik go into this in great detail in their books on imperialism.

I remember hearing Carl speak on this on the Silk & Steel 13-part History of China. That was when I learned about the Delano family fortune and the Forbes family fortune: from the Opium trade and Opium wars.

He also left out that slaves were also traded via the Manila Galleon trade — Chinese and Philippino slaves to Mexico (called New Spain at the time).
